'First Sentences' book launch
Saturday April 1, 11am - 1pm
Lismore Regional Gallery pop-up space, 46 Magellan St, Lismore Join co-authors Sigrid Macdonald, Make or Break (Connie Anthes and Rebecca Gallo) and designer Ella Cutler for the launch of First Sentences. Created off the back of The Department of Non-Human Resources, Make or Break’s 2021 project at Lismore Regional Gallery, First Sentences brings together community responses to the prompt: imagine a story about the future of this place, and write the first sentence of that story. For the book, which is made up of both written and video components, each original sentence has been interpreted into Auslan, and then translated back into English. First Sentences highlights conceptual and linguistic differences between Auslan and English as a way to encourage curiosity about languages and to share the theatre and poetry of Auslan, an image-based language with no written equivalent. It also shares a selection of the Lismore community’s visions for the future that are startling, warm, funny, thoughtful and challenging. Come and chat to the authors, buy a signed copy of the book, have a snack and watch a screening of the Auslan videos. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body. |
