Drawing and Painting the Face with artist James Guppy
10am - 3pm Sun 16 Sept 2018
The face is one of the most challenging subjects in art. As babies, we are genetically hardwired to recognise faces even before we have gained experience in the nuances of shape, proportion, and expression.
Rendering the face for portraiture requires observational skills unmatched in any other area of the visual arts. Moreover, the understanding and capturing of expression is another complex aspect to master.
Bring your usual drawing materials and paper. For those of you with the experience who wish to paint you should bring your usual painting equipment and a support to paint on ( support means canvas, paper, board etc.). Don't get carried away and bring a huge canvas. Something approximately the size of an A3 sheet of paper is big enough and remember the beautiful small cigarbox portraits of Tom Roberts, they were smaller than an A4.
Cost: $150 per person
Booking online, spaces limited to 10 people.

* Please note: Unfortunately oil paint is problematic due to the fumes affecting other students. Water soluble oil paints are a good solution, otherwise the student must use odourless solvents. I'm afraid turps cannot be used. The other problem with a short course is drying time, for this reason I would urge the use of acrylic paint. Water colour and gouache are other options if that is your preferred medium.
BIO:
James has always been a painter. His work examines social issues through the lens of western art history. His paintings are evocative dreamscapes exploring notions of beauty, relationships and the nature of taboos. Through them he attempts a dialogue with the viewer, providing a narrative structure that provokes thought about the old themes- the nature of life, our role in war, love, death and the search for meaning.
He has been hung twice in the Archibald, again in the Sulman in 2008; as well as winning many other prestigious awards with his finely detailed paintings. His work is held in many major public and private collections across Australia, Asia, Europe and the USA Please visit www.jamesguppy.com
