ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Armenian needle lace is a knotting technique made with simply a needle and thread. Because it is made with lightweight and commonly found materials, it is a craft that has survived the forced displacement of many generations of Armenians.
Over the last century, the craft of Armenian needle lace has been painstakingly preserved within communities of the Armenian diaspora through intergenerational instruction, how-to books, exhibitions, and, in recent years, video tutorials.
Works utilising this craft feature in Joanna’s current exhibition in Gallery 5, “Fear Catchers and Neon Talismans.”
In this workshop Joanna will demonstrate and take participants through the basics of Armenian needle lace techniques, making samplers using simple patterns used in the craft. This is a process Joanna has been teaching herself and learning through various sources, including online workshops with Armenian/American artist Emma Welty.
