Join the artists in The Alchemists for an artist in conversation about their work and the magical process of woodfiring. The conversation with be directed by woodfire artist, Ray Cavill.
The process of firing is far removed from the modern world, with its noise, machines, electronics and materials made using complex, environmentally costly processes. It is an ancient method of firing clay. The artists in this exhibition were drawn to the qualities firing with wood could bring to their work. They were not so concerned with clean, perfect surfaces, but with marks of heat, ash and the movement of flame. Woodfiring became an aesthetic and philosophical choice. It matched ideologies around being off-grid and using materials such as wood, bricks, and clay that could be sourced easily, affordably, and often locally.
