Real Worlds: Dobell Australian Drawing Biennial 2020, Art Gallery NSW Touring exhibition artist Jack Stahel's workshop will explore how the brain and the ways we think can impact drawing. Jack will take participants through a series of different drawing activities with range of drawing materials.
Participants will also have an opportunity to see Jack's and other artists in the Real Worlds: Dobell Australian Drawing Biennial 2020 exhibition in Gallery 1 showing at Lismore Regional Gallery from 6 March - 25 April 2021.
Of course we draw with our hands, and with our eyes, but what other roles can our brain play in the equation? And how do we individually achieve a sense of what those roles can be? Join Jack Stahel for a workshop in exploring how we can learn to understand those roles, and how to manipulate them.
The act of drawing always finds itself somewhere between human-made tools and actions, and the organic processes of a natural organ. Tools, objects and actions, are unavoidably integrated into our cognitive processes. They impact on how those organic processes unfold, as well as how those processes understand themselves.
Of course a drawing as an object can have a meaning, but drawing as a process is a form of understanding. It is a primordial result of the author, aka yourself, and it teaches you about how things come into reality. It is the beginning of changing the material condition of the world.

About Jack Stahel: Jack Stahel (1988) is a Sydney based artist. His practice is a surreal kaleidoscope of outcomes, borne from the creative dissection and examination of introspection itself. Under his own fabricated field of research - imaginary science - he focuses on the intersections of art and science as a single form of enquiry, and drawing and collecting as a combined creative medium. He explores their applications in examining the brain and an individual’s experience of their own.
Stahel graduated from UNSW College of Fine Arts in 2012, and received a scholarship to complete his MFA research degree in 2015. He has exhibited extensively in Sydney, and at galleries across Australia, including the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Newcastle Art Gallery and Bathurst Regional Gallery.
