Susan Fell Mclean :: Gondwana Colour: Eucalyptus Colour
4 Aug - 2 Sept 2018
Gallery 5
Opening 5pm Friday 3 Aug 2018
At a time when the environment of our planet is suffering a disastrous assault from pollution, runoff from synthetic dyes used in the textile industry, flows freely into many rivers throughout the world. “Gondwana Colour: Eucalyptus Colour” invites an alternative awareness of the beauty of natural dyes. Subtle at the same time rich, colours of plant dyes, specifically eucalyptus surround the viewer with an aesthetic treat of texture, hue and translucencies. This textile art installation captivates by simplicity, intriguing audiences with the sheer, earthy aesthetic, inherent in shibori artworks dyed with Nature’s colours of eucalyptus. Each of 7 species has a leaf embossed, botanical imprint illustration created by Mother Nature. Feeling a need to touch and smell the art cloth for traces of eucalyptus, these works trigger multisensory (visual, olfactory, auditory) memory in each individual.
Susan Fell Mclean will be conducting a number of workshops in natural dyeing techniques and a talk, see our event page for more details.
