Survivor is a major art project by contemporary Indonesian-Australian artist Dadang Christanto. Initially developed in 2008 as a live protest against an environmental disaster that occurred in East Java which saw hot volcanic mud wipe out 11 villages and destroy many lives, Survivor has since transgressed beyond cultural borders, evolving into a universal, multi-faceted reflection upon human survival and what it means to endure tragic historical events, loss and death.

The work reflects upon feelings of emptiness and vacancy, concentrating on the vulnerability of the man-made environment once it reaches its use by date, a stage where it is no longer something to be valued and admired.
