Trading Place :: Clare Urquhart & Cassandra Purdon
12 Sept - 24 Oct 2015
Gallery Upstairs
Anyone who would like to get involved is asked to bring along a miniature artwork or object (not exceeding 11 x 15 x 11 cm … approximately) that is important or significant to them and reflects their connection to place. The hosting artists also ask you to provide a brief explanation about the personal significance of the piece being offered for trade. As the trade economy goes, they will then decide on the trades, and which ones are successful or rejected.
Trading Place is an ongoing project with future exhibitions already planned in which to ’trade’ the objects exchanged in previous installations. The exhibition morphs and changes each time it is shown; leaving traces of the stories of objects, people, places and past exhibitions wherever it is exhibited.
A capitalist economy doesn’t provide a lot of space for barter. Historically there was a thriving barter economy among travellers with gift exchange being very popular. Trading Place aims to capture the spirit of these exchanges between artists by playing on the nomadic nature of contemporary art practice.
Trading Place is thoughtful – about our environment, the way we live and the impact we have on it. It questions the values we place on objects and highlights our connection to place all at the same time.
Cass and Clare will be trading Thursdays 11.30am – 12.30pm
