Occulture :: Steve Waller
28 Mar - 28 June 2020
Gallery 5
These works display the presence and essence of Steve’s drawing practice as a visual incantation, summoning the winds of cultural change. An alchemical mixture of mark-making that embody the spirit of energetic disturbance, white noise, tonal glitch, quasi reality, the seen and the unseen, investigating the pathology of our culture. In fact, Steve is comparing Occult practices to the act of drawing, the practice of magic, the ritual, the secret societies, hidden knowledge. The darkness and the light.
But now of course change is upon us. In light of recent events the original show was revised and compiled from a larger body of work. Selected based on the knowledge that Lismore Regional Gallery will be temporarily closed to the public, but the show itself will remain, in a form of stasis being viewed through a window. This work will be a space without people, haunting itself, in a way a disembodied space, devoid of time, a no-space. Surely culture cannot exist without the souls that feed it?
The exhibition by Steve Waller can be viewed from the Gallery 5 window (outside Lismore Regional Gallery) and please email the Gallery for artwork sales and enquiries: art.gallery@lismore.nsw.gov.au
