We are partnering with Cult Classic Lismore for a screening of Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams at the historic Star Court Theatre! Join us for an offsite program that links our current exhibition And her hallway moves like the ocean by Babette Robertson, to the screening of this beautiful, strange and deeply personal film.
Robertson's emotive, surreal and otherworldly paintings recount her dreams as shifting symbols drawn from the collective unconscious. Kurosawa's Dreams gave the artist permission to think of the dream not as an escape from reality but as another way of encountering it. In the film, the boundaries between the personal and the collective, the psychological and the historical, the human and the natural world are constantly dissolving. The dream is never only about the dreamer.
Dreams is one of Kurosawa’s most visually poetic films. Told as a series of eight vignettes, the film moves through childhood memory, Japanese folklore, war, environmental anxiety, art, death, and renewal. Rather than following a conventional narrative, Dreams unfolds like a collection of visions, each one rich with colour, symbolism, and atmosphere. As the dreams shift between beauty and dread, Kurosawa creates a film shaped by memory, myth, and the fears of the modern world. With its painterly images, meditative pace, and unforgettable sequences, Dreams is a rare chance to experience one of cinema’s great visual artists on the big screen.

About Cult Classic Lismore
Cult Classic began as a celebration of the films that have carved out a place in popular culture. From iconic horror and surreal thrillers to beloved family favourites, we screen movies that have stood the test of time, gained cult followings, or simply earned a special place in the hearts of audiences. They host regular screenings in Lismore, offering a chance to revisit old favourites, discover new classics, and experience them together on the big screen. Their goal is to bring people together around the kind of films that spark conversation, nostalgia, and a little bit of cinematic magic.
