The Department of Non-Human Resources :: Make or Break
1 Apr – 6 Jun 2021
Gallery 3

This project subjects the gallery to a collective rethinking, examining its relationship to consumption, waste, knowledge-production, cycles of nature and community. Make or Break invites speculation, thinking together, research, conversation and hands-on making to dig into questions of sustainability and sustainment as we face an uncertain future. The exhibition space will change and adapt as the artists work on a series of storytelling and prototyping activities with local people who are working, living and experimenting in related ways.

Make or Break is a collaboration between artists Connie Anthes and Rebecca Gallo, who live and work on Gadigal, Bidjigal and Burramattagal lands in inner-city and western Sydney. They will be spending time and facilitating actions here on Bundjalung land during the exhibition.

Unpacking Futures
, Sat 3 April & Wed 7 April, 11am - 3pm, drop-ins welcome.
Make or Break will be in the gallery unpacking their show, building a thinking room and taking suggestions from the public about how the exhibition and workshops could be re-organised. All ages welcome.

DONHR reading group, every Thurs 5-6pm. Starting 8 April.
Make or Break will host a weekly reading group to explore a wide range of texts on sustainability, community and speculative futures. Texts will range from theory and non-fiction to kids stories, sci-fi and futurism, with recommendations sourced from within the Lismore community. Come every week or drop in to read, talk and imagine together. Readers are welcome to gather in the Gallery each week, or join online (links to readings will be posted here weekly)

Re-wilding planting session, dates coming soon!
Make or Break, in collaboration with a group of young people from New Choices, will be planting native grasses in planter boxes for Youth Week and in the square behind Lismore Regional Gallery, for harvesting and use as a weaving material during the exhibition. All ages welcome, there will be physical work like bending and digging required.

Workshop: Storytelling from Non-Human Perspectives, Sat 10 April, 11am - 12.30pm.
Make or Break will host a writing and storytelling workshop, which de-centres human perspectives and gives voice to plants, critters, processes, buildings and biota as teachers and holders of knowledge, as a way to reimagine the future. Free, ages 12 and over welcome.

Please note: some sessions will have AUSLAN accompaniment.
More program dates coming soon, stay tuned!
