Akio Suzuki :: Sense of Ekō
12 Jun - 1 Aug 2021
Gallery 2
A retrospective exhibition curated by Lawrence EnglishSince 1963, celebrated Japanese sound artist Akio Suzuki has been creating aural situations which have challenged and influenced countless artists in his wake. His guiding principles are those of ‘throwing’ and ‘following’ – from his earliest work in which he literally threw objects down Nagoya railway station’s stairs (and was subsequently dragged away by staff) to sophisticated, extended sessions in which echoes, resonance and the accidental gather to produce profound soundscapes, Suzuki’s works are at once playfully irreverent and deeply meditative. He provokes us to reconsider relationships with sound, space and time.
Commissioned by The Substation and AsiaTOPA. Originally presented in association with Room 40.
