I like painting boxes and wood. They are like buildings [but] they are not meant to represent anything. I paint different colours β blue, orange, red, white and green. I feel happy when I paint. When I'm painting I'm calm.
β Damian Showyin
Suede blue is the first solo exhibition of Damian Showyin, initially presented at Mosman Art Gallery. It presents Damianβs output across a formative year, during which he evolved his long running painting practice into the three-dimensional sphere.
Filling two entire gallery spaces, Damianβs exhibition intersects painting, sculpture and architecture, and builds an environment of curiosity, wonder and playfulness. The audience is invited to self-navigate Damian's dynamic world, finding both points of interest and moments of meditation.
Damian Showyin works with Studio A, a Sydney-based leading supported studio for artists with intellectual disability.
Presented in conjunction with Studio A. Proudly funded by NSW Government.
Originally commissioned by Mosman Art Gallery and curated by Shan Turner-Carroll.
Studio A is a Sydney-based social enterprise and arts company that makes great art and tackles the barriers artists with intellectual disability face in accessing conventional education, professional development pathways and opportunities needed to be successful and renowned visual artists.
Studio A is driven to ensure artists with intellectual disability have a voice in contemporary Australian culture and to provide employment to their artists through sustainable creative industry careers. Supported by Studio A, their artists are exhibiting and selling work, receiving commissions, licensing their intellectual property and working with leading companies in the commercial and arts sectors.
