A circle whose centre is nowhere and whose circumference is everywhere. Seven Circles is an invitation by the artist, Lucia Canuto, to consider the circles as a puddle, trampoline, hayrake, log, wheel and Cretan threshing circle. The works are made using Crepe de Chine silk and cotton bed sheet fabrics, exposed by the cyanotype print method, which relies on strong sunlight for exposure. Each work is dyed using natural pigments found in plants and synthesised colours. Often, the colours are unstable and unpredictable, surprising both the artist and the viewer. Canuto discovered this process over time through error and experiment, a method that resembles alchemy, harkening back to prescientific medieval explorations of different elements and speculative philosophies.
