Madeline Kidd and Masato Takasaka are both Melbourne based artists with respective independent practices. For Playroom, Kidd will present a new series of digital prints, mirror and shelf works, a continuation in Kidd’s work of domestic familiarity reinvented. Her works stylistically reference a range of genres and art forms including Italian Memphis design.
Takasaka thinks about his studio practice in musical terms, describing his aesthetic as an iPod Shuffle: playing the greatest hits of 20th century avant-garde art, with references to constructivism, dada, pop and minimalism alongside the back catalogue of his own greatest hits. This practice of recycling previous works to generate new work forms part of Takasaka’s art historical research into the culture of appropriation.
For this exhibition however they are working together, creating an installation in which the works are in conversation. Takasaka and Kidd are husband and wife, thus the act of working together will draw parallels with their domestic relationship, the knowing of each other and agreements and disagreements that come when bonded people share space.
