Daphne Kal-Ma-Kuta Dux was born in Brisbane in 1928, her people are the Joondoobarrie from Bribie Island. Dux began painting at the age of seventy-seven. It was then that she began to feel for her Aboriginal identity which had been withheld from her throughout her life. She said, "I can’t tell you my dreaming stories, because I don’t know them. But with painting I try to find this other, painting place that connects to my ancestry and a fantasy world. I’ve always been a dreamer".
