Bundjalung stories: our art, our connection to country

The Aboriginal artwork displayed in this exhibition was produced by students from Lismore’s primary public schools, and grew out of stories told by Uncle Digby Moran back in May 2015.

On 28 May 2015, about 30 Aboriginal students from across Lismore’s primary public schools gathered to meet with, and talk to, respected Bundjalung Elder and renowned artist, Uncle Digby Moran.
Sitting among a collection of his paintings of ‘pippi’ birds and Christmas bells, Uncle Digby talked about how he creates his artwork and about what inspires him. He shared with the children stories about growing up on Cabbage Tree Island, telling tales of going fishing with his mum, catching prawns using a hessian bag, and of dolphins swimming up the river.
Uncle Digby’s storytelling became the inspiration for the works of art presented in this exhibition. Each of the schools featured took an idea from one of Uncle Digby’s stories, and brought the story to life through their paintings.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to Uncle Digby for his inspiration, his passion, his time, and for sharing his wonderful childhood memories with our students.
